Nearly two decades after its release, Fabolous’ iconic track “Breathe” has officially gone platinum. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the certification on Wednesday, signifying one million units sold in the United States.
A Milestone Achievement
Released in 2004 as part of Fab’s Real Talk album, “Breathe” was a game-changing single produced by Just Blaze. The track reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 16 weeks on the chart, cementing itself as one of the rapper’s standout hits.
Fab Reflects on the Track’s Legacy
The 47-year-old rapper revisited the origins of “Breathe” during an October appearance on Carmelo Anthony and Mero’s 7PM in Brooklyn podcast. Fabolous explained that the song was a deliberate shift to prove his versatility as a lyricist, moving away from the romantic, radio-friendly hits he had become known for, like “Can’t Let You Go” and “Trade It All.”
“You had to make those songs to get on the radio,” Fab shared. “That’s where ‘Breathe’ came from: I’m going too far one way, and it might get to a point where people don’t even know you rap, or don’t even put you in the category.”
A Timeless Anthem
“Breathe” showcased Fabolous’ lyrical skills and cemented his place in hip-hop history. Its platinum certification is a testament to its enduring influence in rap culture.
