Kendrick Lamar has made history with his latest album GNX, not only landing at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart but also sweeping the entire top five of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. His new track “Squabble Up” debuted at No. 1, marking Lamar’s fifth Hot 100 No. 1 and his third of 2024 — the most of any artist this year.
A Record-Breaking Week for Lamar
“Squabble Up,” which garnered 52 million streams, 5.7 million radio airplay impressions, and 5,000 physical sales in its debut week, is Lamar’s fifth chart-topper. It follows previous No. 1 hits “Not Like Us” (May 2024) and “Like That” (April 2024), both of which also topped the chart this year. Lamar is now the first solo male artist to have three No. 1 debuts in a single year, joining BTS (2021) and Ariana Grande (2020) as the only acts to accomplish this feat.
Dominating the Top Five
Lamar also made history by securing the entire top five spots on the Hot 100 with four more debuts from GNX:
- No. 2: “TV Off” (featuring Lefty Gunplay)
- No. 3: “Luther” (with SZA)
- No. 4: “Wacced Out Murals”
- No. 5: “Hey Now” (featuring Dody6)
Lamar becomes the fourth artist to ever dominate the entire top five, following Taylor Swift, Drake, and The Beatles. Taylor Swift holds the record for having the most entries in the top 10 in a single week, achieving Nos. 1-10 in May 2024, while Drake placed at Nos. 1-5 and 7-10 in 2021. The Beatles were the first to achieve the feat in 1964.
Lamar’s Career Milestone
With the debut of “Reincarnated” at No. 8 and “Man at the Garden” at No. 9, Lamar now boasts 22 top 10 hits, joining a select group of artists with that many. Drake leads the all-time list with 79 top 10s, followed by Taylor Swift with 59.
In addition, Lamar continues to break new ground on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart, where “Squabble Up” became his sixth No. 1. It also topped both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, further solidifying his dominance across multiple genres.
New Collaborations and Milestones
Lamar’s “Luther,” featuring SZA, samples Luther Vandross’ and Cheryl Lynn’s iconic cover of “If This World Were Mine,” further blending classic R&B influences into his work. SZA’s top 10 placement with Lamar marks her 11th top 10 hit, while Lefty Gunplay and Dody6 earn their first-ever top 10 placements.
