Sony Music UK has announced the appointment of Azi Eftekhari as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective immediately. Reporting directly to Jason Iley, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland, Eftekhari will oversee key operational areas, including the label’s Commercial Group, and will play a key role in shaping the company’s growth strategy moving forward.
A Wealth of Experience in Music and Tech
Eftekhari brings over 20 years of experience in the music and entertainment industries to her new role. Most recently, she served as co-president of Universal Music Recordings, where she managed the catalog division and worked with legendary artists like The Beatles, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, and The Rolling Stones. Her tenure at UMG also included significant work with global music catalogs, cementing her as a leader in the industry.
Before her time at Universal, Eftekhari was Head of Label Relations at YouTube, where she played a pivotal role in launching YouTube Music across Europe and securing a major partnership with The BRIT Awards. She also co-led Remedy Inc., a creative agency working across music, theatre, and branding projects, further solidifying her reputation as a forward-thinking innovator at the intersection of music and technology.
Strong Foundations at Mercury Records
Eftekhari’s career began at Mercury Records, where she worked alongside Iley, then Director of Digital and Publicity. She contributed to successful campaigns for artists such as U2, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber. Eftekhari’s extensive leadership roles extended beyond corporate positions, as she served on the boards of the Official Charts Company and the Entertainment Retailers Association, reflecting her broader influence in the industry.
