Pharrell Williams Compares Future’s Flow to His Gospel Roots in Powerful Reflection

Pharrell Williams sees a deep connection between his gospel roots and Future’s unique flow. During a recent appearance on Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast, the multi-talented producer, rapper, and Louis Vuitton designer opened up about how his upbringing in Baptist and Pentecostal churches shaped his musical outlook—and how it resonates with Future’s style.

Gospel Meets Atlanta’s Finest

Pharrell, who has collaborated with Future on hits like “Move That Dope” and N.E.R.D.’s “1000,” explained how the Atlanta rapper’s use of Auto-Tune mirrors the rhythm and emotion of church sermons. “Think Future with Auto-Tune,” Pharrell said around the 27-minute mark of the interview. “When Future is rhyming, he’s picking a note and finding these pockets that correspond with the beat’s chords. That’s what they would do in church.”

He painted a vivid picture of his father’s Pentecostal church, led by Bishop Barnett Karl Thoroughgood, where sermons would seamlessly blend with music. “The organist—often my Uncle Ezekiel—would play a note as the preacher spoke, creating a powerful, welling feeling that would explode within the congregation,” Pharrell reflected.

Future’s Influence on Pharrell

Pharrell’s admiration for Future isn’t new. In a September interview with Complex, he named Future’s 2024 project Mixtape Pluto as a major inspiration. Tracks like “Aye Say Gang,” “Ski,” and “Plutoski” stand out to Pharrell, who described Future as “other” and “just great.” He even doubled down on his praise in his latest GQ cover story, gushing, “Can you tell Future that I’m obsessed with Mixtape Pluto?”

Music Rooted in Spirituality

Pharrell also ties this gospel influence to his life story, showcased in his LEGO-animated biopic Piece by Piece. The film delves into the church-driven foundation of his artistry and how it continues to influence his work today.

Whether through gospel or trap, Pharrell reminds us of music’s universal power to move and inspire. Stay locked to WrapUp TV for more stories on the intersection of culture, music, and style!
