Christmas came early for Young Thug fans as the Atlanta rap icon dropped his Slime Season 2 mixtape on streaming platforms, nine years after its initial release. Originally debuting on Halloween 2015, this fan-favorite project remains one of the most celebrated installments in Thugger’s legendary Slime Season trilogy.
The trilogy kicked off after the release of Thug’s mainstream debut, Barter 6, in 2015. The first Slime Season landed in September, quickly followed by SS2 just weeks later. While fans eagerly awaited the next chapter, Thug took a brief detour, dropping I’m Up in early 2016, before delivering SS3 that March.
Sparse on features but packed with undeniable bangers, SS2 sees Thug teaming up with a select roster. Lil Uzi Vert delivers on the album opener “Big Racks,” Trouble makes an unforgettable appearance on “Thief in the Night,” Yak Gotti flexes on “Pull Up on a Kid,” and Rich Homie Quan reunites with Thug on “Never Made Love.”
To celebrate the trilogy’s legacy, Thug announced a vinyl bundle featuring all three installments. Unsurprisingly, it sold out immediately, with fans snapping up the collector’s item, which even includes alternate artwork for SS3.
The album’s release provides a welcome distraction from Thug’s personal life, which has made headlines recently. Footage surfaced on Dec. 23 of the rapper consoling Leena Sayed over the phone during his time in prison. Sayed, now expecting a child with professional boxer Devin Haney, clarified the two-year-old video, writing, “That video was before I met my bd…I would never talk to Thug or any other man.” Meanwhile, Thug’s own relationship drama was on display when he tweeted, “She so mad, I said merry Christmas and she said thank u.”
Drama aside, the release of Slime Season 2 on DSPs is a long-awaited gift for fans who’ve been holding it down for nearly a decade. Whether you’re revisiting the project or discovering it for the first time, there’s no better way to close out the year than with Thugger’s iconic sound.
