Keanu Reeves Jokes About the Physical Toll of Another ‘John Wick’ Film: “My Knees Are Saying No”

Could we ever see Keanu Reeves return for a fifth John Wick movie? According to the beloved actor, it might not be entirely up to him—it could be his knees making the call.

While promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Reeves lends his voice to the iconic Shadow the Hedgehog, the 60-year-old action star sat down with CBS Mornings alongside director Jeff Fowler. Naturally, the conversation turned to Reeves’ most action-packed role as the legendary assassin, John Wick. The most recent installment, John Wick: Chapter 4, hit theaters in March and pushed the boundaries of Reeves’ physicality.

Around the five-minute mark of the interview, Reeves addressed whether he’d consider returning for another chapter in the high-octane franchise.

“You can never say never,” Reeves began, before quipping, “but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick.’” He laughed, adding, “My heart does, but I don’t know if my knees can do it.”

Director Jeff Fowler chimed in, pointing out that Reeves could voice Shadow for decades without the physical toll of stunts. “There are no physical limitations, just your voice!” Fowler said. Reeves smiled and replied, “I’m free!”

Reeves has been candid about the grueling demands of playing Wick. At a 10th-anniversary screening of the original film, the actor reflected on how challenging the role has been, even admitting that the intense training and action sequences occasionally left him physically ill.

“I had so many wonderful teachers and worked with so many talented actors, actresses, and stunt people,” Reeves said during the event. “It’s such a dance, a collaboration, and cooperation. But yeah, there were a couple of times where you throw up or puke or whatever—that’s what makes it good!”

Known for his dedication, Reeves has performed an astounding 90-95% of his own stunts throughout the John Wick series. It’s no wonder his knees might be asking for a break. Director Chad Stahelski, who helmed all four John Wick films, even started his career as Reeves’ stunt double during The Matrix trilogy.

As much as fans would love to see another chapter of John Wick, Reeves’ focus on longevity—and his knees’ demands—might mean we’ll see him in less physically punishing roles moving forward. But for now, we can enjoy his voice work as Shadow the Hedgehog, proving that Keanu Reeves doesn’t need intense stunt work to shine.
