Kirk Franklin felt the need to clear the air about two eyebrow-raising moments from his shows.
Earlier this year, the gospel star caught some heat when he performed shirtless in a tank top in Jamaica, showing off his arms and getting sweaty on stage. During another show on his ‘Reunion Tour,’ the 20-time Grammy winner stirred up more drama when he jokingly twerked on Clark Sisters’ Jacky Clark Chisholm.
Looking to make things right, Franklin dropped a video apology in late December addressing those who weren’t happy with his shows.
Around the 6:30 mark, he explained his wardrobe choice: “I now understand that our team’s decision about what to wear in that weather wasn’t the best call – we didn’t mean for it to come across as disrespectful. Throughout my career, I’ve always danced and moved around on stage, and I never thought I’d do something that would upset anyone in any community. But I did, and since it bothered people, I want to say I’m truly sorry.”
Franklin went deeper with his apology saying, “I truly want to stay teachable,” and added, “If I’m drowning out Jesus’s message, then I’ve missed the mark completely, no matter what my intentions were.”
When it came to his twerking moment with Clark Chisholm, Franklin admitted he took it too far, even though they’re all close friends.
“I should’ve kept that playful energy behind closed doors with my friends,” he confessed. “Sometimes I even annoy myself. While it felt okay in the moment, watching that clip back – yeah, I definitely went overboard.”
The video also covered other highlights from Franklin’s year, including his BET Awards collab with Will Smith and celebrating his son Caziah’s wedding.
