Ice Cube’s giving props to Tyler, The Creator, calling him part of “the L.A. people don’t know about.”
In a chat with HipHopDX’s Jeremy Hecht, Cube – who dropped his Man Down album last November – shared his thoughts on West Coast music today. When Hecht brought up Tyler as someone who keeps it “authentically themselves,” Cube jumped in with his take.
“That’s L.A. right there,” Cube explained. “That’s the side of L.A. folks don’t see, these super creative people who won’t fit into the gangbanging box. They’re gonna do their own thing. He reminds me of The Pharcyde, when they were a group. And don’t forget the Black Eyed Peas started here too.”
He added, “You’re always gonna have those artists who stick to their own style, their own vibe, and make it work. They’re not playing by anyone else’s rules or trying to be what others want. They’re just being themselves, and you gotta respect that.”
Tyler crushed it in 2024 with his surprise drop Chromakopia and another killer Camp Flog Gnaw festival at Dodger Stadium. He’s keeping the momentum going next month, hitting the road with Lil Yachty and Paris Texas for the Chromakopia World Tour, which is shaping up to be one of the year’s hottest tickets.
As for Ice Cube, he wrapped up 2024 with a sit-down on Noah Callahan-Bever’s Idea Generation. You can check out their full conversation here.
