Will Ferrell’s breaking down why he hit up a Kings game as a rough-looking Buddy the Elf.
Chatting with Jason and Travis Kelce on their ‘New Heights’ podcast, the 57-year-old star dished about bringing back his ‘Elf’ character at last month’s Kings vs Flyers game – a move that sent social media wild.
“Buddy the Elf got laid off, I think, from the North Pole,” he joked around the 2:23 mark. “He’s having a pull from his beer, smoking a cig.”
“I get these wild thoughts sometimes,” he laughed. “So I told my wife -’cause we’re season ticket holders at the L.A. Kings, we have seats right on the glass, which are amazing. I said, ‘Gosh, over the break. You know what? It’d be funny if I just got like a Buddy the Elf costume and didn’t shave for like a week, and I’m just sitting there with like a candy cigarette. And I’m just gonna, like, sit there for a period and see how people react. And that was it.”
The ‘SNL’ legend said people went nuts over it.
“Everyone’s like, ‘What’s he up to? Is this promo for something?’ But honestly, I just love doing random stuff like this to shake things up,” he admitted.
Some fans online thought his stunt meant an ‘Elf’ sequel was coming. But back in 2021, Ferrell actually passed on $29 million to do another ‘Elf’ movie because of beef with director Jon Favreau.
He told ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ then, “I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money.’ And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.'”
