Keegan-Michael Key’s setting the record straight about his friendship with Jordan Peele, saying they’re still “good” despite not hanging as much these days.
Speaking to People, Key dished on how the former Key & Peele duo keeps their bond strong. “Whenever we have an opportunity to see each other, we do,” Key shared. “Whenever we have an opportunity.”
“I certainly enjoy spending time with him, so when my travels take me to Los Angeles, he’s usually one of the first calls that I make,” he added. “I land, and I go, ‘Hey buddy, we’re in town,’ and often we get to have dinner.”
Key explained how their friendship stays solid regardless of distance. “Our relationship is like a good friend’s relationship, where you pick up where you left off, or the little things that you shared in the past, you just go right back into it again,” he said. “I look forward to seeing him in 2025.”
Back in September, Key got nostalgic about his early days with Peele. “We lived together for a few months and would write and talk about comedy — who we liked and why we liked them and how that worked in the architecture of what we were trying to build comedically,” he reminisced, adding that “we don’t see each other that often anymore, which is, to me, a tragedy.”
Their reunion might have to wait since Peele’s busy cooking up his next film. On Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, he talked about his fourth movie that got pushed from last Christmas due to the Hollywood strikes.
“This has been…obviously, it’s been an interesting year because the writer’s strike had had me in a state of listening, and that’s where I need to be,” Peele explained.
He hinted this might be his best yet: “I do feel like my next project is clear to me, and I’m psyched that I have another film that, you know, could be my favorite movie if I make it right.”
Meanwhile, Key’s been keeping busy himself, popping up in Choice Hotels’ newest ads.
