Jayson Tatum’s back with that awkward story about dumping wine on Michael Jordan.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Tatum broke down how he spilled wine on the GOAT when they first met after his Jordan Brand signing. He’d previously shared a longer version on Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn.
“The same day I met him and I announced that I was signing to Jordan brand, later that evening they had a dinner for all the athletes and I walked in I was still I think I just turned 21,” Tatum told Kimmel around nine minutes in. “It was MJ, his wife, and Spike Lee, they were sitting at the table and my table was like over there and I just wanted to go introduce myself.”
“I was so nervous my hands were shaking and I go to shake his hand and I knock over his wine glass and I spill it everywhere. I break the glass and I’m speechless. He was super cool about it because that’s probably happened to him a thousand times.”
Last summer on 7PM in Brooklyn, Tatum added that his mom pushed him to approach MJ. Jordan brushed off the spill, which led to them becoming close.
“He’s like, ‘Yo, young fella you’re alright,’ you know what I’m saying? ‘Go sit back down, you good.’…Ever since then, we’ve been locked in and that’s another person I will text and I will call,” Tatum revealed, adding that he’s got Jordan saved as “Uncle Mike” in his phone.
Tatum’s relationship with Jordan’s old teammate Steve Kerr seems less warm. After a Celtics-Warriors game, he seemed to brush off Kerr while chatting with Steph Curry.
People think it might have something to do with Kerr benching him during Team USA’s 2024 Paris Olympics run. Tatum had opened up about how tough that was, saying not playing was “a lot” since he’s “never not played.”
