Star Irish Prop Furlong to Miss Six Nations Start Due to Calf Issue
Leinster powerhouse Tadhg Furlong, 32, won’t feature in Saturday’s clash against England at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium after aggravating his calf during the team’s Portugal training camp.
The tight-head prop, who missed November’s internationals with hamstring trouble, had just made his comeback in Leinster’s victory over La Rochelle before sitting out the Bath game.
While rookie Jack Aungier joins the squad as cover, his Connacht colleague Finlay Bealham looks set to fill Furlong’s boots in the starting lineup against England.
England secured a dramatic win over Ireland at Twickenham last year when Marcus Smith nailed a drop goal in the final moments, clinching a 23-22 victory and snapping Ireland’s four-game winning streak against them.
Ireland got some good news as Dan Sheehan made an impressive return from his ACL injury, scoring twice and earning player of the match for Leinster on Saturday. He and James Lowe, who also came back from injury successfully, joined the squad’s Portugal camp Sunday.
