Selena Gomez got tearful discussing Donald Trump’s widespread removal of undocumented immigrants.
“I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked,” Gomez cried in a now-removed Instagram clip. “The children, I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
She also wrote “I’m sorry” with a Mexican flag in the video’s caption.
In a later deleted post, Gomez hit back with “Apparently, it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” suggesting she faced criticism for her emotional video.
The Only Murders in the Building star has Mexican heritage through her dad’s side. She’s dropped several Spanish tracks like “Taki Taki” and “De Una Vez,” and recently took a role in the Spanish film Emilia Pérez.
Gomez has been a vocal supporter of undocumented immigrants, putting her producer hat on for the documentary Living Undocumented. In a powerful Time piece, she wrote that “undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day, and I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance.”
Since returning to power, Trump’s tightened his grip on undocumented immigrants. The BBC reports ICE rounded up 956 people across Chicago, Newark, and Miami who face deportation. From last Thursday to Saturday, over 1,400 individuals were detained. According to Forbes, Trump lifted restrictions that previously kept ICE from making arrests in schools, churches, and hospitals.
