The comedy icon Damon Wayans revealed he wasn’t around when his son Damon Jr. first came into the world.
Back in ’82, a 22-year-old Wayans shipped his baby mama Lisa Thorner off to Vermont to stay with her mom. He wasn’t ready for dad life.
“I sent his mom to Vermont to live with her mother because I was really just running from him,” Wayans admitted to People in a new sit-down, about a minute into the clip.
“I was too young to have a child … I couldn’t see myself with a kid,” he confessed. “I didn’t meet Jr. until he was like 5 weeks old.”
“I remember driving up to the house and I heard him crying outside of the house in Vermont,” Wayans Sr. shared. “Lisa, his mom, she doesn’t know what [to do]. Her hair is all frazzled and I say, ‘Hey, give him to me.'”
He recalled how his baby boy instantly stopped crying when he picked him up.
“And I’m just holding him and humming and he’s just looking up at me and that was the moment that I realized I gotta be a man for this guy,” he reflected. “I gotta grow up.”
Later in their chat, the Wayans boys spilled some tea about having Michael Jordan as their neighbor in the ’90s – apparently he was always at their spot. Junior cracked up remembering how the GOAT would raid their kitchen.
“That’s how good our snacks were when Jordan’s in there just like munching on your freaking [snacks],” Jr. laughed.
The older Wayans remembered how his buddies would go crazy trying to sneak peeks at Jordan at their house.
“One thing I really put the my foot down was, ‘Don’t bother him,'” he shared.
