St. Louis native Sexyy Red knows firsthand about the harsh reality of police brutality in her hometown.
“The police in St Louis just shot another Black kid dead the other day. That shit’s so wrong,” she revealed to Dazed. “When I go back home, there are usually two outcomes [when I am stopped in traffic]: they either like your music and want to tell you about their kids being fans, or they choose to mess with you even more [now you’re this celebrity]! Sometimes they pick on me or just fuck with me for fun. They like to remind you of where you are. It’s all about reinforcing their position [of power].”
She called out police harassment way back in her 2018 track “Free Smoke” with the line “Ain’t no music playin’ but the police say we loud.”
The rapper’s been making waves lately with “Fat, Juicy & Wet,” her collab with Bruno Mars. The music video’s got some star power too, featuring Mars’ past collaborators Lady Gaga and ROSÉ.
The track hit No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 4 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
