Michelle Trachtenberg has died, according to reports from WABC and the New York Post.
Based on an ABC regional report citing police sources, Trachtenberg was found dead in a New York City apartment on Wednesday. The actress, who first rose to fame as a Nickelodeon star, was 39 years old.
The ABC report states that Trachtenberg was discovered Wednesday morning by her mother. Sources told the outlet that the beloved Harriet the Spy and Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress had recently undergone a liver transplant procedure.
Trachtenberg’s official TV debut came in 1994 with The Adventures of Pete & Pete, where the child star played cast-wearing neighbor Nona F. Mecklenberg. By 1996, she had made her big screen debut with Harriet the Spy, a significant title for Nick as it was the first Nickelodeon Movies production.
On Buffy, Trachtenberg portrayed Dawn Summers, the younger sister of the iconic show’s main character, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. After first appearing as Dawn at the beginning of the show’s fifth season, Trachtenberg stayed on as a main cast member until the series ended in 2003.
In 2007, she appeared alongside fellow Buffy star Seth Green in the music video for Fall Out Boy’s Infinity on High single and Hot 100 hit “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race.”
