Lauryn Hill surprised her Jazz in the Gardens (JITG) Music Festival audience by bringing Doechii onstage to perform “Doo Wop (That Thing)” together.
Though Doechii was already scheduled to perform at the festival, fans weren’t expecting this collaboration. Doechii took the spotlight, handling the verses while Hill played a supporting role and energized her throughout.
Check out a video of the performance below.
After the performance, Doechii expressed her gratitude on X for both Hill and the experience.
“Thank you Miss Lauryn Hill. Thank you. My heart is so full. She is my hero,” Doechii wrote. “This is the greatest honor hip hop could give me. Praise God … my entire body is vibrating with joy right now. I’ll never forget this day! EVER!”
In another post, Doechii shared her pre-show nerves: “I never been so nervous in my life she is a QUEEN.”
Another performance that must have rattled Doechii’s nerves was her set at last month’s 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Though she delivered flawlessly, she faced accusations of performing her Alligator Bites Never Heal songs “Catfish” and “Denial Is A River” with a “pre-recorded voice.”
“I can’t possibly get on here and say this calmly or nicely,” Doechii fired back. “Y’all are stupid as hell. So slow! Ahhhhh! That is my DJ’s [DJ Miss Milan] voice picking up on the lines that I can’t say because I’m doing A SOMERSAULT.”
She explained that her performance was completely live despite health challenges. “That entire performance was live!” She clarified. “I was sick as a dog with bronchitis and the flu, performing my ass off in a straddle on top of human men.”
“[I] worked my ass off to build the stamina for that, for y’all to play in my face,” Doechii added. “I don’t lip-sync. Don’t ever fucking play with me like that. Ever!”
Doechii recently appeared on Hot Ones Versus with DJ Miss Millan, which you can watch below.
