Lil Yachty Breaks Down Why He Thinks the Black Lives Matter Foundation Is a ‘Scam’

Lil Yachty slammed the Black Lives Matter organization as a “scam” during his chat on Quenlin Blackwell’s YouTube channel.

When asked about his charitable donations, Blackwell specifically questioned at the 31:51 mark if he’d given money to BLM. “BLM? Since you want to be so Black power,” she suggested, to which Yachty bluntly replied, “BLM is a scam.”

“Clip that! Send it to the fucking news,” Blackwell joked in response.

Lil Yachty called the Black Lives Matter organization a “scam” while chatting on Quenlin Blackwell’s YouTube channel.

“BLM was a—it was literally a scam,” Yachty explained. “They had bought mansions.”

He was likely referencing accusations against the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation after it purchased a $6 million compound in Los Angeles’ Studio City neighborhood.

BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors told The Associated Press in 2022 that the property—which features six bedrooms and bathrooms, a pool, soundstage and office space—was meant to provide Black artists with a campus and meeting venue.

“We really wanted to make sure that the global network foundation had an asset that wasn’t just financial resources,” Cullors said. “And we understood that not many Black-led organizations have property. They don’t own their property.”

Some supporters worried the purchase might create distrust among donors concerned about how their contributions were being used.

Though Cullors tried to address these concerns, she admitted using the compound twice for personal reasons.

She strongly denied accusations of buying homes for herself and family with foundation funds.

“The idea that (the foundation) received millions of dollars and then I hid those dollars in my bank account is absolutely false,” she stated. “That’s a false narrative. It’s impacted me personally and professionally, that people would accuse me of stealing from Black people.”

Cullors stepped down as the foundation’s executive director in 2021.
