Ben Affleck revealed how he keeps his kids grounded by reminding them who actually has the money.
During an Access Hollywood interview, Affleck discussed his kids’ expensive requests.
“There’s always some grift why I need to be buying,” he said. “I’m like, bruh, you do not need $1,000 shoes. He’s like, ‘We have the money.’ I’m like, ‘I have the money—you’re broke.'”
At a recent Got Sole sneaker convention, Affleck’s 13-year-old son Samuel spotted a pair of $6,000 Dior Air Jordan 1s he wanted. Before the teen could convince his dad to buy them, Affleck told him, “That’s a lot of lawns you’ve gotta mow there.”
Ben Affleck dropped some parenting wisdom by letting his kids know who actually controls the wallet.
“You like those because they’re expensive,” he told his son.
This approach echoes what Shaquille O’Neal shared in a 2021 Earn Your Leisure interview about his conversations with his children.
“My kids are older now,” Shaq said. “They’re kinda upset with me. Not really upset, but they don’t understand. I tell them all the time. We ain’t rich. I’m rich.”
Shaq explained the specific steps his kids must take for him to support their business ventures.
“You gotta have bachelor’s or master’s [degrees], and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you’re going to have to present it, boom boom boom, bring it to me. I’ll let you know, I’m not giving you nothing,” he stated.
Shaq emphasized he wants his children to earn their own way, just like he did.
“I don’t care if you play basketball. I don’t care about none of that,” he added. “Listen, I got six kids. I would like a doctor, somebody to own a hedge fund, a pharmacist, a lawyer, someone that owns multiple businesses, someone to take over my business. But I tell them, ‘I’m not going to hand it to you. You gotta earn it.'”
