Wendy Williams opened up about her guardianship situation and recent hospital visit during a phone interview on The View last Friday (March 14).
The conversation happened about a week after Williams, 60, was taken from her Manhattan assisted living facility to Mount Sinai West hospital for a cognitive health evaluation. According to the New York Post, she scored a perfect 10 out of 10 on her “capacity test,” suggesting her cognitive health is intact. During the call, Williams was accompanied by Ginalisa Monterroso, president of the Connect Care Advisory Group.
“I just needed a breath of fresh air. I needed to see the doctors,” Williams explained around the 1-minute mark of the first video below. The former talk show host also had blood drawn for thyroid testing, along with an “independent evaluation” of incapacitation. Williams has been under court-ordered guardianship since 2022 and was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia last year.
After her hospital visit, Williams returned to her assisted living facility following dinner with her niece. “Why am I here… where people don’t remember anything?” Williams questioned about her living situation. “I stay in the bedroom the majority of the time.”
Later in the interview, as seen below, Monterroso explained that the guardianship was initially established to protect Williams’ finances, which she doesn’t oppose. “I didn’t mind it at that time … but at this point in my life, I want to terminate [the] guardianship and move on with my life, if that’s possible at all.”
Williams also described her “isolation” while living in a Connecticut memory unit for a year. “As far as family, that was all I was calling,” she said around the 1:50 mark above. “There were no friends I could call, because the guardian kept my phone.”
Williams made it clear she’s staying in New York and doesn’t want a guardian, especially her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey. “It’s been over three years, and it’s time for my money and my life to get back to status quo,” she insisted.
The now alcohol-free Williams was featured in last year’s documentary Where Is Wendy Williams?, which suggested her cognitive health was deteriorating. Since January, she’s fought against her guardianship, calling it a “prison,” and criticized her 24-year-old son, Kevin Hunter Jr., for misusing her finances.
