Beyoncé doesn’t actually keep songwriters locked away in some underground chamber to create her hits.
Sia, who penned Beyoncé’s 2013 track “Pretty Hurts,” dismissed this absurd rumor during a quick interview with Gotham Galleria.
While visiting New York City, Sia was dressed in all black for a fit check with Gotham, describing her outfit that included pieces from Prada and Negativo. At the end of the conversation, she was asked about the “craziest” rumor she’d heard about herself.
“Um, that I was living in Beyoncé’s basement,” she replied.
Sia’s comment shocked the BeyHive, as this rumor stemmed from a misunderstood statement about Beyoncé’s songwriting process back in 2015.
“The process is like a writing camp, essentially. She flies us all in and puts us all up,” Sia told Rolling Stone that year. “We all live in a house together — like five producers and five topline writers. She visits each room and will contribute and let us know what she’s feeling and what she’s not feeling.”
This quote somehow got twisted into claims that Sia was being held captive, which couldn’t be further from reality. In 2020, Sia played along with the joke, telling a fan that she lives “in Beyoncé’s basement.”
In other Sia news, the singer filed for divorce from her second husband, Daniel Bernard, this week after 26 months of marriage. The couple welcomed a child named Somersault Wonder Bernard last March, while Sia previously adopted two sons in 2019.
