Chappell Roan Says Calling Out Entitled Fan Behavior Has Created a ‘Force Field’

Chappell Roan has figured out how to create a “force field” around herself in public. Speaking with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, she revealed it’s simply about establishing clear boundaries with fans early on.

After discussing fashion choices, regional accents, and the Jonas Brothers, Cooper asked whether Roan can still experience anonymity and if disguises are an option for her, given her rising fame that includes a Grammy for Best New Artist and her 2023 album marking its 52nd week on the Billboard 200.

“I think people are scared of me,” Roan explained, referring to her previous statements about toxic fan entitlement harming artists. “I think I made a big enough deal about not talking to me that people do not talk to me. That’s, I think, the truth of it all. And I’ve been with people, friends who are artists, and they’re like ‘It’s a force field around us. People don’t come up to me if I’m with you.'”

Chappell says she’s advised artist friends to publicly set their own boundaries for similar results, emphasizing the “force field” effect it creates. While she admitted “it hurts” having to speak out about this behavior, she made it clear that any suggestion her widely-reported comments from last year were just “complaining about success” was completely wrong.

“I’m just complaining about creepy behavior,” she said, adding that she loves “admiration,” as would anyone, but not entitled interruptions into her personal life. See Chappell’s full conversation with Alex below.

Chappell Roan’s latest single “The Giver,” which features fiddle, dropped earlier this month after she performed it live on SNL last November. The Missouri-born star recently chatted with Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen about the song’s creation, explaining that writing the Hot 100 hit allowed her to “honor” the part of herself deeply connected to country music.
