Mary J. Blige shared a powerful statement about her personal growth on X this Thursday.
“Unfortunately, a lot of y’all met me when I lacked boundaries and was a people pleaser,” the iconic singer posted. “Let me reintroduce myself, I burn bridges as needed.”
It’s not clear what sparked the “Family Affair” singer’s bold statement, but fans were quick to call her out.
X user @BriMalandro responded by quote-tweeting Blige’s post with an old viral interview clip where she discussed her “least favorite thing” – which turned out to be “interviews like this.”
The user pointed out in another tweet that Blige’s interview response hardly suggested she was once a people pleaser.
In the video, when asked what she dislikes about interviews, Blige candidly replied: “What I don’t like is that you read all the interviews, and you done read 50 million interviews with the same thing in it, and you ask me the same questions that are in the books. So you already know but I gotta answer the same question over and over again. I hate that.”
When the reporter asked what question Blige hadn’t been asked yet, she bluntly replied, “I don’t want them to ask me anything. So don’t ask me.”
“So you’d rather not do the interview at all?” the reporter continued.
“I’d rather not,” Blige stated.
The interview’s source is unclear, but TikTok user @he_is_derione indicates the clip is from 1997.
That same year, Blige dropped her third album, Share My World, which topped the Billboard 200 and became her first No. 1 album.
