Doechii made it crystal clear she’s not down with the anti-LGBTQ hate during her acceptance speech at the GLAAD Media Award.
On Thursday, Doechii added another trophy to her collection when she took home the outstanding music artist award at the annual ceremony. Previous GLAAD Award winners Lil Nas X and Maren Morris presented Doechii with the honor, and she seized the moment to talk about her win while also putting a spotlight on the LGBTQ community.
“I am thrilled at being recognized with such a prestigious award by GLAAD and to be joining prior honorees such as Renee [Rapp], Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Sam Smith and Janelle Monáe,” she said. “This is a huge and special moment as well because GLAAD is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, which is super fab.”
Doechii then highlighted how GLAAD champions “acceptance, inclusiveness, and empowerment” before addressing the country’s current climate and emphasizing that the LGBTQ community is here to stay and flourish.
“Those are the same things I strongly believe in and advocate for and that continue to propel me forward — especially now that hard-won cultural change and rights for transgender people and the LGBTQ community have been threatened,” she said. “And I am disgusted. Disgusted. But I want to say that we are here and we are not going anywhere.”
She added, “[Do] not let anyone ever block your dreams … I just want to encourage you guys to stay connected with one another. Stay passionate. Stay focused. Keep your chin up. Be kind, and be fab!”
Doechii’s latest win follows her victory at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards where she took home Best Rap Album. During that acceptance speech, she encouraged all Black women to stay true to themselves.
Doechii, who identifies as bisexual, also shared words of wisdom for LGBTQ youth back in February.
