DJ Swamp Izzo reveals that Playboi Carti was working on MUSIC right up until the album dropped.
In our recent conversation with him, Izzo shared details about Carti’s creative approach to the project, saying that even on release day, Carti wanted to keep going. “The album was done. Supposed to drop at 12,” Izzo explained. “[Carti]’s like ‘Nah Swamp. Just go in the other room and just give me some more energy.'”
“We was just trying to make the album more and more exciting,” Izzo added. “We recorded all the way until the album came out. So when it dropped at seven, we were still in the studio on everything I love.”
Izzo also hinted that Playboi Carti’s next project, BABY BOI, is already completed. Despite just releasing MUSIC last month, Carti has been heavily suggesting his next work is ready. Izzo confirmed he’s already finished tons of material for it.
“New music. He got over 50, 60 songs done,” he stated. “Completed to his liking? I couldn’t say. But they’re done. If I was still in that mixtape era, we’d have Baby Boi one through nine. Fifteen years ago, we were so heartfelt on them exclusives. We couldn’t even sleep until we put it out before everybody.”
Izzo also described how new listeners react to hearing his presence on Carti’s album.
“For the newcomers, the first time hearing it, it’s like a shocker because it’s not Carti in a sense. I come with a hip-hop feel. I come from the mixtape era, so I bring that element to it,” Izzo explained. “A lot of samples—of course, the Rich Kidz—and just a lot of yelling and excitement over the songs.”
“For the people who are just hearing it for the first time and are not aware of mixtapes, I think that it’s a shocker,” Izzo continued. “‘What is this? This is not what we accustomed to.’ As I look at the comments, they listen again and again. Then they get it.”
