Aaron Carter’s Twin Sister Remembers Their Heated Final Chat Three Days Before His Death: ‘I Was Angry’

Angel Carter Conrad, Aaron Carter’s twin sister, opened up about their rocky relationship.

“It breaks my heart that the last time I saw him was in 2019 in a courtroom,” Angel, 37, told People in a fresh interview. “It was the last time I ever saw Aaron in person.”

Angel spoke with the magazine ahead of a new documentary, The Carters: Hurts to Love You, where she discussed her relationship with Aaron and their older siblings Leslie and Bobbie Jean (who died in 2012 and 2023, respectively, both from accidental drug overdoses).

After that courtroom encounter, Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter released a statement in 2019 announcing he and Angel were getting restraining orders against Aaron “due to his increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child.”

“We had no choice but to take every possible measure to protect ourselves and our family,” Nick’s statement said at the time.

Angel reveals she never saw Aaron face-to-face again after court but had talked to him before his death. Following the restraining orders, Angel and Aaron reconnected through lengthy phone calls.

Though they were starting to “open the door” to fixing their relationship, Angel mentioned, “I talked to him three days before he passed away.”

“[Aaron] was on Instagram Live and huffing duster cans and passing out and all these things. So I just called him, and I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ And he tried to deny it,” Angel remembered.

“And I said, ‘Aaron, I saw you on Live. I saw it happen. Live, you doing this.’ And then he blamed me, and he said, ‘Well, you’re the reason why I’d use drugs.’ And I said, ‘Aaron, that’s not really fair. You can’t, don’t blame me for this.'”

“I was angry, honestly,” she admitted. “I was angry that he had told me that I was the reason why he was doing drugs and got off the phone. And that was the last time I talked to him.”

Their conversation ended with plans to meet in person with a therapist present. Sadly, that meeting never happened.

Aaron was found dead in his bathtub on Nov. 5, 2022. According to the coroner’s report, the singer drowned after inhaling difluoroethane and taking alprazolam, the generic form of Xanax.

Angel, who has a 6-year-old daughter, Harper, with husband Corey Conrad, now works with the Ohio-based Kids Mental Health Foundation hoping to help parents start conversations with their children.

“We are just so thrilled to be involved, and to share my story and to be able to inspire others,” she said.

The Carters: Hurts to Love You, directed by Soleil Moon Frye, debuts April 15 on Paramount+.
