BigXthaPlug, riding high after dropping his country-influenced new track “All the Way” with Bailey Zimmerman, brings raw honesty and big dreams to his latest GQ interview. During his revealing chat with former Complex writer Frazier Tharpe, the Texas artist shared a shocking childhood memory of watching his mother shoot at a home invader while he was enjoying Scooby-Doo.
As noted in the full article (available online), BigX lived with his mother for his first nine years. According to him, his mom was actually the first person he ever saw use a firearm.
“This is back then, though, but I know my mama from selling drugs and shooting at people,” BigX revealed. “The first time I ever seen somebody get shot my mama was holding me. My mama shot somebody—they tried to break in. I was sitting on the couch watching Scooby-Doo, I’ll never forget it.”
Elsewhere in the interview, BigX chatted with GQ about his strategic approach to picking collaborators, how he embraces vulnerability in his music, and more. This new interview drops ahead of BigX’s anticipated country-focused project, following last year’s sophomore album Take Care, which became his first to crack the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album also landed at No. 17 on Complex’s best albums of 2024 list, alongside major releases from Kendrick Lamar and Charli xcx, among others.
In a recent Complex interview, BigX’s “All the Way” collaborator Bailey Zimmerman mentioned he was “already a fan” before they even had the chance to work together.
“I think we have more in the tank,” Zimmerman told Complex. “I think we’ve got more heartbreak stories. We’ve got more to talk about and I think this is just the beginning of seeing country and rap collide like this. … That dude is a legend!”
