Ryan Coogler found inspiration for his new film Sinners from a surprising place.
While chatting with Get REC’D with Straw Hat Goof on YouTube, Coogler shared that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, particularly the movie’s villain, Death, helped shape the vampires in his latest project.
“So I talk about influences in this movie […] That’s a massive one I love,” he said about the Shrek spin-off. “Think about the villain Death, think about his defining features [the eyes], think about his demeanor.”
Coogler mentioned that this influence was strengthened by one of the artists on his team, Louis Gonzales, who spent nearly 20 years at Pixar and contributed to several films including The Iron Giant and both Black Panther movies.
Sinners is hitting theaters on April 18 with a star-studded cast including Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and others. The story follows twin brothers, played by Jordan, whose home gets invaded by a dangerous supernatural threat.
Coogler recently blew up online with a video where he explains various film formats while recommending the best way for audiences to experience his new movie.
