Ryan Coogler, whose brilliant new movie Sinners drops this Friday and deserves your immediate attention, reflects on the intense pressure he felt during Black Panther’s massive success in a recent conversation with LeBron James. The fascinating pairing, featured in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, shows Coogler in a thoughtful mood when discussing that chapter of his career.
LeBron appropriately described the Chadwick Boseman-starring 2018 Marvel film’s release as a “movement” that went beyond being just a movie.
“To be honest with you, Bron—and it’s one of my great regrets—I was so young while we were making it, and so stressed out, that I didn’t appreciate what was happening, man,” Coogler admitted to LeBron when asked when he realized the scale of what was unfolding. “There were a few moments where I’d be like, ‘Oh man, this shit is getting crazy.'”
From there, Coogler, who’s slated to return for a third installment of the Black Panther series, highlighted Kendrick Lamar’s musical contributions and the “incredible work” delivered by Michael B. Jordan and the late Boseman. However, during all the excitement, Coogler reveals he was “dealing with impostor syndrome,” which prevented him from fully embracing the experience.
“I couldn’t appreciate the moment,” he confessed to LeBron.

Sinners, also starring Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo, reunites Coogler and Jordan following their previous commercial and critical hits with Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther. The film buzzes with unmistakable energy right from the start, keeping viewers on edge with its taut suspense throughout.
For Coogler, Sinners represents a deliberate artistic shift, one that’s closely connected to the broader mission driving his Proximity Media company alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.
