Lil Wayne Claims NFL Told Him to Raise His Profile Then Handed Super Bowl Show to Kendrick Lamar

Lil Wayne’s given up on his Super Bowl Halftime Show dreams.

In a fresh cover interview with Rolling Stone, Wayne revealed that the NFL dangled the opportunity in front of him and pushed him to show up at celebrity gatherings, only to point fingers at Jay-Z and Roc Nation when Wayne wasn’t selected for the performance.

“To perform, it’s a bunch of things they’re going to tell you to do and not do, asses to kiss and not kiss,” Weezy explained.

“If you notice, I was a part of things I’ve never been a part of. Like [Michael] Rubin’s all-white parties. I’m doing shit with Tom Brady. That was all for that. You ain’t never seen me in them types of venues. I ain’t Drake. I ain’t out there smiling like that everywhere. I’m in the stu’, smokin’ and recording.”

Wayne mentioned that after Kendrick Lamar was announced, someone from the NFL apologized to him and claimed, “We ain’t in charge” of selecting performers for the show.

He also admitted he skipped watching Lamar’s performance, choosing instead to play pool with Lil Twist and smoke. “Every time I looked, it was nothing that made me want to go inside and see what was going on,” he said.

Wayne spent considerable time pursuing the halftime show opportunity, but he’s now put it behind him. “They stole that feeling. I don’t want to do it. It was perfect.”

Many fans felt he deserved the Super Bowl spot, especially since the game was held in his New Orleans hometown. Though he openly shared his disappointment about being overlooked—saying in an Instagram video that being passed over “hurt a whole lot”—he still remained gracious about it. He later shared that he had spoken with Dot and “wished him all the best and told him he better kill it.”

On the bright side, Tunechi has fresh music coming soon. In February, he announced that his eagerly awaited Tha Carter VI album will finally drop on June 6.
