Lizzo Shares Lifestyle Shifts Behind Her Weight Loss: ‘We Rebel Against Counting Calories’

Lizzo opened up more about the shifts she’s made to her lifestyle as part of her weight loss journey.

During a TikTok Live on Tuesday (April 22), the 36-year-old star gave more details on her “weight release” journey that began in 2023.

One of the moves that helped the “About Damn Time” hitmaker drop her body mass index by 10.5 and shed 16% of her body fat includes cutting back on “sugary stuff” in the morning, going for breakfasts that are “super savory.”

“I do something sweet. It’s gotta be with some sort of like carb. I’ll have like almond butter and toast. So, everybody’s body is different. Find out what works for you,” Lizzo said per People, while pointing out that she believes in the scientific approach of “calories in versus calories out.”

However, the star has a specific caution about anyone who might be obsessing over numbers to maintain a caloric deficit.

“We rebel against counting calories because it is a gateway to eating disorders,” she said. “I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly be counting calories and to constantly have that number in your head. I don’t think it’s healthy to constantly get on the scale and always be checking your weight, and to be obsessed with the numbers.”

Lizzo also addressed the country’s food system broadly. “What I also don’t think is healthy is the American food system that sneaks calorically dense foods into our bodies because it’s all we can afford right now, or because it look really good, or it’s because we all it’s all we have access to, or because it’s how I grew up and it’s all I know,” she added. “Sometimes I have to use [calorie counting] as a tool to fight against the American food system. But when I cook at home when I cook for myself or … when I eat at home I don’t have to.”

Looking back at her previous habits, Lizzo remembered drinking “two to three” large Starbucks drinks daily until she realized she was taking in up to 1,200 calories from the beverages alone.

“Once I realized that I had stopped drinking coffee, and also I had had, like, panic attacks and stuff so I just stopped drinking coffee for a while, and I had to regulate my nervous system,” she said.

“I had to start applying a calorie deficit, because I was prone to binging,” she continued.

Lizzo also opened up about how anxiety played a role in her journey, saying, “I’ve been working to get my anxiety under control for years. And then I decided that I want to release and I’m ready to stop waiting to be myself like fully and be happy.”

She added, “And I meditated. I calmed myself down. And I isolated a little bit, but not like made myself lonely, not the way I used to when I was depressed. I isolated myself in a mindful way where I had no distractions. I loved to distract myself with people. I loved to distract myself with food. I loved to distract myself with drinking. I loved to distract myself with problems that I would create. I would love to do that. And I stopped doing that, and I just focused on me.”
