Playboi Carti appears far from pleased with Ye following the release of his latest track “Alive,” which features NBA YoungBoy.
Several fans initially believed the release, which incorporates samples from Carti’s song “CRANK,” had received proper legal approval and might even indicate a reconciliation between the artists. However, that assumption was swiftly dismissed when Carti posted on his Opium Instagram account, sharing a music video for his own version of the song alongside the caption, “DIS MY SONG LIL BRA @ye.”
The circumstances surrounding how both tracks, each featuring NBA YoungBoy, ended up in Ye’s hands remain unclear.
Sneako, a streamer who has been spending time with Ye throughout the past month, argues that “ALIVE” isn’t Carti’s property since he didn’t create the instrumental.
“Ye made the beat, clearly,” Sneako stated. “If you listen to Carti’s version, it’s not good.”
Meanwhile, NBA YoungBoy released a solo track titled “Finest” just hours after Ye posted their joint collaboration.
This marks another instance where the artist formerly known as Kanye West has put out music without obtaining proper legal clearance from the original creator.
Back in February, Ye and Ty Dolla Sign faced a lawsuit from Donna Summer’s estate over an “unauthorized interpolation” of her classic “I Feel Love” used to craft “Good (Don’t Die)” from Vultures 1.
Following the track’s removal from digital streaming platforms, the pair resolved the legal dispute for an undisclosed sum four months afterward.
Ye has also encountered clearance problems with Ozzy Osbourne regarding samples from a 1983 live rendition of “War Pigs,” and allegedly failed to seek permission from the Backstreet Boys or their representatives for his reworking of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”
The friction between Carti and Ye has been building for several months.
Following Carti’s release of his MUSIC album in March, Ye made multiple critical remarks about the project, including expressing his disapproval of Kendrick Lamar’s features on the record. These comments eventually led Carti to respond on Twitter with “YE STFU.”
