Unless plans change, Ryan Coogler won’t be developing a Sinners sequel.
The filmmaker discussed his latest blockbuster with EBONY and shared his desire for this project to differ from the franchises he’s directed, such as Creed and Black Panther. In an unprecedented move, Coogler obtained the rights to Sinners, ensuring film ownership returns to him after 25 years.
During the EBONY interview, Coogler stated he “never” considers the possibility of creating a Sinners 2. “I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” he continued. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”
The director emphasized wanting audiences to feel they received a “full meal.” “I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention,” he said.
While Sinners becomes available on VOD Tuesday (June 3), viewers have been captivated by the horror and period drama, with many watching it repeatedly, helping push its box office earnings past $350 million.
