Chrisette Michele has revealed she was recently diagnosed with autism at the age of 42.
The singer, now also hosting her own podcast on YouTube, took to Instagram with two photos of herself and shared the news: “I just learned I’m autistic,” she wrote. “Official diagnosis. They used the word ‘Severely.’”
She also opened up about why she’s been quieter online lately. “I’ve been outside,” she said. “Singing… but learning to strip the mask. One show at a time (the irony). Just… coming to grips with a lot and giving myself room to take it all in. My life and its challenges finally make sense. So so much sense. Autistic. Would you get a load of that… I’ll talk more soon. Just wanted to say hi… from stage side.”
Chrisette Michele has kept a lower profile in recent years following the heavy backlash she received after performing at Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration.
Despite defending her decision at the time, the fallout was swift—her label dropped her, and she revealed that her own family had “disowned” her over it.
During a post-inauguration interview on The Breakfast Club, Michele explained that she didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation, even though she admitted being “confused” by some of Trump’s campaign rhetoric.
