Mariah Carey Doubles Down on Not Recognizing ‘Time’: ‘I Don’t Have a Birthday’

Mariah Carey is sticking to her story—she still doesn’t recognize birthdays or even time itself.

While promoting her new single “Type Dangerous,” the music icon sat down with Capital FM hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North, and Chris Stark, where the topic of time came up once again.

“Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?” North asked.

“That is true,” Carey replied without hesitation. “I just don’t believe in it.”

Her casual answer had the hosts in stitches. When they pressed her about time zones and clocks, she joked, “No, just time… I don’t acknowledge clocks either.”

When asked directly if she celebrates her birthday, Carey responded with a classic: “I don’t have a birthday, no. Anniversaries, yes.”

Stark then asked, “But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” To which Carey cheekily replied, “Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”

Longtime fans—her Lambily—won’t be shocked. Back in a 2014 Out Magazine interview, she famously said, “I don’t count years, but I definitely rebuke them… I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling.”

She echoed the same sentiment in a 2016 Complex cover story, saying, “I don’t have a birthday. I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience.”

Alongside her latest single, Carey is also marking the 20th anniversary of her smash 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi—anniversary style, of course.

The Emancipation of Mimi—home to chart-toppers like “We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off,” and “It’s Like That”—has been re-released in a special five-LP vinyl box set. The deluxe edition includes fresh remixes and the never-before-heard track “When I Feel It,” and it’s available now at Complex Shop.

For fans looking for a more classic setup, a two-LP version is also available in both standard black and a limited edition clear vinyl.
