R. Kelly’s lawyers claim a prison staff member gave him a dangerously high dose of medication that could have been deadly.

R. Kelly’s legal team is raising fresh concerns about his treatment behind bars, claiming a prison staffer gave him an overdose of medication that nearly killed him. According to TMZ, attorney Beau B. Brindley filed documents alleging the incident took place on June 12 in solitary confinement at a North Carolina facility. Kelly was reportedly rushed to a local hospital and remained there for two days.

This new claim follows earlier allegations that an inmate had been tasked with trying to kill the singer. On top of that, Kelly’s team says he’s being denied surgery to treat an alleged blood clot condition.

When Complex reached out for comment, the Bureau of Prisons declined to speak on Kelly’s situation, citing privacy, safety, and ongoing legal proceedings.

Regarding the earlier claims of an attempted prison assassination, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Julien responded on Monday, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Julien argued that R. Kelly “has never taken responsibility for his years of sexually abusing children,” and criticized the defense’s approach in seeking his release from custody.

Back in 2022, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison following a federal conviction tied to racketeering charges based on crimes including the sexual exploitation of minors, forced labor, and multiple violations of the Mann Act. The Grammy-winning singer also faced additional convictions and sentencing for child sex crimes in Illinois.
