Alchemist Reveals Why He Didn’t Send Beats to Lil Wayne for ‘Tha Carter VI’

The Alchemist came close to landing a spot on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter VI—but says he missed the opportunity because he was “overthinking it.”

Speaking with HipHopDX on the BET Awards red carpet, the veteran producer opened up about his connection to Wayne and shared that he was indeed approached to contribute to the album.

“Mack Maine is a good friend of mine and we talk regularly,” Alchemist said. “And I probably missed the boat ’cause they told me to send something for this record and I was just overthinking it.”

He admitted that Wayne’s legendary status made him second-guess his approach. “Wayne is like up in the quasars as far as MCs, so you never know. I was probably thinking too hard. Listen, we all do that. I overthought it, but next time I won’t.”

When asked if he’s been in the studio with Wayne recently, he simply responded, “Not lately.”

Lil Wayne and The Alchemist actually go way back—their first collaboration dates all the way to 1999 when Wayne appeared alongside Cormega on the track “Who Can I Trust.”

While Tha Carter VI didn’t end up featuring any production from Alchemist, the album still boasts a lineup of heavyweight collaborations, including Big Sean, Machine Gun Kelly, and 2 Chainz.
