Ariana Grande’s grandmother, affectionately called “Nonna,” has passed away at 99.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday, June 17, by Ariana’s mother, Joan Grande, who shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram Story.

“We are devastated to share that the beloved matriarch of our family has passed away,” the statement read. “Marjorie (Nonna) Grande passed peacefully in her home, surrounded by family and loved ones during every moment of her final weeks.
“We thank you for your love, support, and for respecting our privacy as we grieve and celebrate her beautiful, extraordinary life. Love, The Grandes.”
Nonna held a meaningful role in Ariana Grande’s life and career. She was present when Ariana saw the original Broadway cast of Wicked and even won an auction to meet Kristin Chenoweth backstage — the actress who originated the role of Glinda.
That moment came full circle years later when Ariana was cast as Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of Wicked. Born in 1925, Nonna was around 14 when The Wizard of Oz hit theaters in 1939, starring Judy Garland.
Nonna’s voice and wisdom became a cherished part of Ariana Grande’s music through the years.
She made her first appearance on Ariana’s 2013 debut album Yours Truly, sharing the story of her romance with Frank Grande—Ariana’s late grandfather—on the track “Daydreamin’.”
In 2019, she introduced the song “Bloodline” on Thank U, Next, and later made Billboard history at 98 as the oldest person ever featured on the Hot 100 chart when “Ordinary Things” from Eternal Sunshine debuted at No. 55.
Her heartfelt words on that track left a lasting impression: “Never go to bed without kissin’ goodnight. That’s the worst thing to do. Don’t ever, ever do that. And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you’re in the wrong place—get out.”
