M.I.A. is calling out some major déjà vu after hearing Tyler, the Creator and Doechii’s new track “Get Right.”
On Wednesday, June 25, the British artist reacted to a fan on X who noticed similarities between “Get Right” and her 2007 hit “Boyz.” The user @_rawLAW posted a clip of the song playing during the Louis Vuitton SS26 show in Paris, writing, “It kind of gives me ‘Boyz’ by @MIAuniverse.”
M.I.A. didn’t hold back in her response: “Bro it’s literally my song,” she replied, adding a selfie video of herself with the track playing in the background.
While Tyler and Doechii haven’t responded, the comparison has fans revisiting Boyz and debating just how close the two songs really are.
“Boyz” originally dropped in 2007 on M.I.A.’s Kala album, a standout track co-produced by her and Switch. Now, over 15 years later, she’s calling out Tyler, the Creator and Doechii’s “Get Right” for sounding a little too familiar—despite that track being produced by Pharrell.
So far, no response from Tyler, Doechii, or Pharrell regarding M.I.A.’s claim. “Get Right” marks the second time Tyler and Doechii have teamed up, following their previous collab on “Balloon” from Doechii’s Chromakopia project.
Interestingly, M.I.A. and Pharrell do have history. They linked up on “Kites,” a track from N.E.R.D.’s 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies—adding another layer to the conversation.
This isn’t the first time M.I.A. has stirred up discourse around music industry heavyweights this year. In a resurfaced 2024 PBD Podcast interview, she made waves by crediting Kanye West as a key creative force behind Jay-Z’s success.
“He added the creativity to that whole thing,” she said, reflecting on Ye’s role. “Yes, Jay-Z was more of a businessman. Kanye was always the artistic one… I don’t think they give him enough respect and dues.”
While some praised her perspective, others debated the dynamics between artistry and business in that iconic partnership. As usual, M.I.A. isn’t afraid to speak her truth—even if it shakes the table.
