Brandy and Monica just revealed that their iconic track “The Boy Is Mine” was actually inspired by The Jerry Springer Show.
During a chat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they were promoting their newly announced reunion tour, Brandy shared the unexpected origin story.
“I was a huge Jerry Springer fan,” Brandy said around the 49-second mark. “One of the topics was ‘The boy is mine,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. Song idea. Let’s do this.’”
In another part of their interview, Monica revealed that she and Brandy are planning to hit the studio again. “We’ll start working on some music immediately,” she said. “That way, we can promote it while we’re on the road. But no studio on the tour bus—that’s rapper territory.”
Earlier this June, Brandy and Monica officially announced their first-ever co-headlining tour, The Boy Is Mine, kicking off October 15 in Cincinnati, OH, and wrapping up December 7 in Houston, TX.
Speaking with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, the duo reflected on finally coming together more than two decades after their chart-topping duet. “They’ve been trying to get us to do a tour since ’98,” Brandy revealed.
“It just finally felt like the right time,” Monica added. “It’s a musical marriage. With a tour of this size, we had to sit down and talk through everything.”
They also addressed the once-rocky dynamic between them. “It started as nothing, but it really did turn into something,” Monica admitted. “There were a lot of people involved.”
Brandy chimed in, “The song didn’t help either. We were fighting over a boy,” prompting Monica to laugh and say, “We don’t even like the same type of boy!”
Joining them on the road will be Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and 2025 American Idol winner Jamal Roberts.
