Gelo admits he misses basketball, though it hasn’t left his life entirely.
In an interview with Nessa on Hot 97, the rapper—who grew up playing the sport through childhood, high school, college, and even professionally—opened up about his current relationship with the game when asked if he still missed it.
“Yeah, I do play, though with my brothers and NBA players behind doors,” he said. “I’m in this music right now, though.”
Gelo explained why his focus has shifted to music, saying, “If the music is paying like that, and the people love it, I’m going to give them what they want.”
He also made it clear that his move into rap wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. “I used to worry about all hoops,” he said. “I was actually writing raps down and battling with my cousins.”
And the switch has definitely paid off. Not only did Gelo land a jaw-dropping $13 million deal with Def Jam earlier this year, but he also earned a spot on XXL’s Freshman Class of 2025.
Beyond the music, there’s even more to celebrate—his girlfriend, Rashida Nicole, is expecting their first child. She shared the news on Instagram, expressing that she’s “grateful, terrified, anxious, nauseous, and HANGRY.”
Gelo is now gearing up to drop his debut studio album, League of My Own, on July 18, after initially teasing a June 27 release. So far, he’s confirmed GloRilla as one of the featured artists on the project.
