While appearing on Theo Von’s podcast, Kevin Gates opened up about fatherhood and the viral moment he dressed up as a furry to support his daughter’s interests.
“My daughter, she’s into the furry costumes,” Gates said around the 1:26:00 mark. “They dressing up like… Don’t kill me, ’cause I don’t want to say it wrong, ’cause she real defensive about this. ‘No, dad, that’s not what it’s called, it’s called this!’ I don’t know the name of it, but they dress up like animals, and I did it one with her. That was my way of like, going into her world.”
The clip in question, shared last year, showed the Louisiana rapper wearing a furry headpiece while appearing alongside his daughter Jade—who was fully decked out in a complete furry costume.
“She was like, ‘I want to post the video that me and you did on TikTok but I’m scared people are going to hate on it,’” Kevin Gates recalled. “I said, ‘Promise me you going to do one thing.’ She said, ‘What?’ I heard Floyd Mayweather say this: ‘No matter what you do, if you do something good, if you do something bad, if you do something for yourself or for other people… people gonna always have something to say about you. So just promise me that you going to make yourself happy.’”
As the conversation continued, Theo Von’s producers pulled up the clip, and Gates proudly pointed himself out in the video. “That’s beautiful, man,” Von said. Gates laughed and added, “I don’t know what I was, I think I was like a little wolf or something.”
He explained that his daughter was nervous at first, but the post blew up once it went live. “She was afraid to post it, but then once she posted, the shit went viral. She was already lit in the furry community. I hope I’m saying it right. I love you! That was my way of going into her world. I’m proud of them.”
