Since hitting theaters this month, Superman has been a fan-favorite — and a nostalgic full-circle moment for some.
Brandon Routh, who suited up as the Man of Steel in 2006’s Superman Returns, shared his reaction to the new film in a chat with Variety published on Monday, July 21. Routh had nothing but praise for David Corenswet’s take on the iconic hero.
“It was a lot of fun,” Routh said. “I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.”
Though Superman Returns faced its share of criticism upon release, Brandon Routh is nothing but supportive when it comes to the latest reimagining of the iconic superhero. He praised David Corenswet for nailing the duality of Superman and Clark Kent.
“I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective,” Routh told Variety. “I really got into it as I’m watching him navigate those tricky Superman moments in the first conversation with Lois and Clark in the apartment. And then all of the family stuff for me really hit. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot in there. I have to go see it again.”
Up next, Routh is starring in the upcoming film Ick, where he plays a teacher named Hank who reconnects with an old flame, Staci (played by Mena Suvari), just as an alien known as the Ick invades their town. The actor hinted that there’s a deeper message beneath the surface of the sci-fi storyline.
“I think [the Ick] can be the things we’re afraid to look at and address because we think they’re going to be icky,” he explained. “But the thing is, it just builds up. It just builds up and up and up and becomes a mask that you can’t control anymore because it’s taken over more of you.”
Ick hits theaters on Thursday, July 24.
