Drake Reflects on His ‘Degrassi’ Days in New Documentary Set to Premiere at TIFF

Drake is heading back to where it all began, revisiting his Degrassi roots in a brand-new documentary.

The global rap icon will appear in Degrassi: Whatever It Takes, which is set to premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this fall. Announced last week as part of TIFF’s documentary section, the film takes a deep dive into the legacy of the groundbreaking Canadian teen drama that launched the careers of many stars, including the 6 God himself.

Directed by Lisa Rideout, the documentary includes exclusive interviews with Drake, franchise creators, former cast members, and passionate superfans. Its official tagline reads: “Superstar rapper Drake looks back on his Degrassi era alongside the franchise’s creators, stars, and superfans in this engaging history of the Canadian show that changed teen TV.”

Drake starred on Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2001 to 2009 as Jimmy Brooks, a popular high school basketball player whose life was forever changed after a school shooting left him paralyzed. The role became Drake’s entry point into the entertainment world and paved the way for his massive music career.

Degrassi: Whatever It Takes is among the most anticipated titles in this year’s TIFF lineup, which coincides with the festival’s milestone 50th anniversary. Other major films starring Angelina Jolie, Saoirse Ronan, Keanu Reeves, and more will also premiere at the event. TIFF 2025 runs from September 4 to September 14 and remains a key launchpad for awards season contenders.
