Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals Why She’s Preparing to Step Away from Hollywood

For decades, Jamie Lee Curtis has captivated audiences in horror films, dramas, and comedies, but she now believes her time in front of the camera may be coming to an end.

In a candid interview with The Guardian, the Halloween star revealed that she is planning to step away from Hollywood, reflecting on how her legendary actor parents, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, were treated as they aged.

“I witnessed my parents lose the very thing that gave them their fame and their life and their livelihood, when the industry rejected them at a certain age,” Curtis shared. “I watched them reach incredible success and then have it slowly erode to where it was gone. And that’s very painful.”

Because of this, the Oscar-winning actress has been quietly planning a graceful exit from Hollywood.

“I have been self-retiring for 30 years,” Curtis admitted. “I have been prepping to get out, so that I don’t have to suffer the same as my family did. I want to leave the party before I’m no longer invited.”

Curtis’ remarkable career has spanned nearly five decades, beginning with her breakout role as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s 1978 horror classic Halloween. She went on to star in iconic films like Trading Places and True Lies, and in 2023, she earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Deirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Although the announcement may surprise fans, Curtis still has several projects on the horizon. She will star in The Lost Bus, premiering this September at the Toronto International Film Festival, and in the upcoming James L. Brooks-directed political comedy Ella McCay.

And of course, audiences can also look forward to seeing her reprise her beloved role as Dr. Tess Coleman in Freakier Friday, which hits theaters on Friday, August 8.
