Adam Sandler found a heartfelt way to honor his late friend and former co-star Cameron Boyce in Happy Gilmore 2.
In a brief scene, Sandler’s character visits a golf course and passes a check-in booth where two people are seen watching TV. Sharp-eyed viewers quickly realized they were watching Jessie, the Disney Channel show in which Boyce played Luke Ross.
The Easter egg touched fans and Cameron’s mother, Libby Boyce, who shared her gratitude on Instagram on Sunday, July 27. She expressed how much the subtle tribute to her son meant to her and to those who loved him.
“Adam and Cameron talked quite a bit in the days leading up to his death,” Libby Boyce shared in her Instagram caption. “Cameron was supposed to be in Hubie Halloween and they were strategizing. They had a bond I think related to being authentic, funny and just keeping it real. Adam always finds a way to keep Cam’s memory alive which warms our heart.”
Cameron Boyce tragically passed away at the age of 20 in 2019 “in his sleep due to a seizure, which was a result of an ongoing medical condition,” a spokesperson revealed at the time. Before his death, Cameron starred as Adam Sandler’s son in Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2.
Shortly after Cameron’s passing, Sandler paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing: “Too young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around. Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us.”
Sandler also honored Cameron in the end credits of the 2020 Netflix original Hubie Halloween, which Cameron had been slated to appear in alongside him.
Happy Gilmore 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
