‘Superstore’ Actor Jon Miyahara Passes Away at 83

Superstore actor Jon Miyahara has died at the age of 83.

The news was confirmed by his co-star Colton Dunn, who paid tribute in a heartfelt Instagram post. Dunn described Miyahara as “a really awesome guy” who “as a performer could speak volumes with just a look.”

“He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and to work with him,” Dunn continued. “I was lucky enough to meet some of his family, and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John.”

Jon Miyahara, best known for playing Cloud 9 employee Brett Kobashigawa on Superstore, appeared in 105 of the show’s 118 episodes. His character became a fan favorite for his signature silence and perfectly timed deadpan stares that often served as the punchline to chaotic moments.

One of his most memorable appearances—and one of the rare times he had dialogue—came in the Season 2 finale, when Brett simply said, “Oh shit,” as a tornado barreled toward the Cloud 9 store.

Born Jonathan Yasushi Miyahara on Aug. 8, 1941, in Los Angeles, the actor also reprised his Brett character in NBC’s American Auto. Outside of those roles, he had no other major acting credits.

After news of his passing broke, Superstore cast members flooded social media with tributes in the comments of Colton Dunn’s post. Kelly Stables, who played Kelly, wrote, “Oh man! He was always so sweet! Rest in peace.”

Sierra Teller Ornelas, a writer and producer on the series, added, “Oh no, he was literally the sweetest man. Prayers up to his family and loved ones.”

Irene White, who played Carol, remembered him as “an incredible man,” while Michael Bunin, who portrayed Jeff, wrote, “I’m so sad to hear this news. Many fun days and many fun conversations. Very nice guy.”
