Rosalía Says Dating Hunter Schafer Brought ‘Freedom’ in Her Sexuality

Rosalía is reflecting on her past romance with Euphoria star Hunter Schafer years after they dated.

In a new interview with Elle published Thursday (Aug. 14), the Spanish singer confirmed to Suzy Exposito that she and Schafer remain friends despite their history.

Schafer had revealed to GQ in 2024 that they were together for five months in 2019, calling Rosalía “family, no matter what.”

When asked if the relationship pushed her to publicly define her sexuality, the “Despechá” singer responded, “No, I do not pressure myself. I think of freedom. That’s what guides me.”

The two have since reunited on the set of Euphoria’s upcoming third season, where Rosalía says she’s enjoyed seeing Schafer and spending time with castmates Zendaya and Alexa Demie. “I have good friends there. It feels really nice to be able to find each other,” she shared.

It’s not the first time Rosalía has collaborated with a former partner — Spanish rapper C. Tangana co-wrote tracks on her 2018 sophomore album El Mal Querer, and in 2023 she dropped RR, a joint EP with then-fiancé Rauw Alejandro. The pair split later that same year.

“I feel grateful to each person with whom life has made me find myself,” she said of her exes.

Since releasing her career-defining 2022 album Motomami, Rosalía says she’s largely stepped away from the online spotlight and confirmed she’s parted ways with longtime collaborator El Guincho, who had worked with her since El Mal Querer.

“We haven’t seen each other [in] years,” she told Elle. “I honestly love working with people long-term. But sometimes people grow apart. He’s on a journey now, he’s done his [own] projects all these years. And yes, sometimes that can happen where people, you know, they grow to do whatever their journey is. Right now, I’m working by myself.”

In an Elle “Ask Me Anything” video, Rosalía revealed that her upcoming album “doesn’t sound like my previous album at all.” She also shared her dream collaborators, following past work with The Weeknd, Lisa from Blackpink, and Bad Bunny.

“I love Kendrick Lamar,” she said. “I would say Charli [XCX]. Of course, Charli. She’s a good friend and I would love to make music with her soon. And Patti Smith, I love Patti Smith.”
