Kid Cudi says marriage has brought him a sense of “complete, total peace” he’s never felt before.
The 41-year-old rapper and author, who recently dropped Cudi: The Memoir, told People that his life feels completely different less than three months after marrying designer Lola Abecassis Sartore, 30.
“I got a homie that’s going to be there for me, [who] ain’t going to leave me alone,” he shared. “No matter where we are on the planet, she’ll be here. I’ll be there. We’re halfway across the country from each other and I still know that I could call her, that I can connect with her, that she’ll be there for me if I ever have a moment of weakness. If I ever need some help, she’ll lift me up.
“So I think that’s the illest part about the whole thing. I mean, of course, there’s so many awesome things that come with marriage, but I think the biggest thing is that I got a homie with me now.”
That security stands in sharp contrast to the loneliness he described in his memoir, recalling weekends spent “smoking all day long, not talking to nobody.”
“The best thing is knowing I don’t have to go through shit by myself no more,” he added. “I got a homie now permanently in my life that’s going to be there for me and uplift me when I need it. And I’m going to be the same for her.”
When it comes to making love last, Cudi says the secret is simple: “live with love.”
“If you love and respect your partner, it should be pretty easy. It’s that simple. And if you found the right person, it should be easy,” he explained. “Of course, you’re going to bump heads sometimes… Y’all going to bump heads, but it’s just about you get through it.”
The couple tied the knot on June 28 in the South of France, a ceremony Sartore described to Vogue as “bliss” and “the purest moment.” The wedding also honored Cudi’s late friend Virgil Abloh, whose 2018 Louis Vuitton show first brought the pair together—Sartore working backstage while Cudi walked the runway.
Alongside his memoir, Cudi released his 11th studio album Free, both charting his evolution from Cleveland kid to multi-platinum artist, and now husband and father.
“I hope it gives [fans] some hope that you do come out on the other side and into the light and God puts us through things because he wants to teach us something,” he said of his memoir. “It’s always a lesson in there, always… even if in the moment, everything just seems like all is lost. But if you really think about it, everything happens for a reason.”
Cudi: The Memoir and his new album Free are out now.
