Channing Tatum is opening up about the “painful” end of his marriage to Jenna Dewan in a new Variety cover story.
The Roofman star reflected on the split in the feature, published Tuesday (Sept. 2), nearly six years after their divorce. Tatum and Dewan, who wed in 2009, separated after eight years together and share a 12-year-old daughter, Everly.
In Roofman, Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, a man estranged from his daughter—something he says he could relate to given that Everly splits time between two homes.
“Jenna and I are good now, but it was a painful break to have that fall apart, especially being so young,” he admitted. “We tried to keep it together, tried for a year and a half, but we knew it was …”
Tatum cut himself off from going “into all that,” calling the split “the past.” Still, he admitted, “it’s really tough not to have your daughter half the time. I wish I could just have her all the time.”
The actor went on to reflect on how his life experiences have shaped him, saying he feels like he’s lived “six or seven different lives,” each one giving him “fuel” to keep pushing forward.
“If you’ve really been heartbroken, and really been in pain and felt real, true aloneness … I’ve experienced enough life that I have something to offer,” Tatum shared. “The technique and the ability to actually deliver.”
Jenna Dewan has been with actor and singer Steve Kazee since 2018, while Channing Tatum is currently dating model Inka Williams. He was previously engaged to his Blink Twice director Zoë Kravitz, but the two called it quits shortly after the film’s premiere.
Tatum and Dewan first met on the set of the 2006 dance classic Step Up. Dewan officially filed for divorce in October 2018, and the split was finalized in September 2024.
